How to continue to dominate the world…
…especially when you have DeepSeek snapping at your heels
Common Man: “We need clear regulations that ensures AI does not harm us with toxicity and bias”
AI Researchers: “We need faster, cheaper and REAL open source AI.”
Government: “Got it! Removing as much regulation as possible and handing over the reigns to big tech. That should solve all your problems.”
President Trump signed an executive order to “sustain and enhance America’s global AI dominance”.
as opposed to the earlier executive order passed by President Biden on “safe, secure and trustworthy AI”
AI policy and regulations are complex. Every government in the world is thinking about AI policy. I believe that there are 4 groups that have a stake in AI:
Governments - Depending on their disposition, they want to decide how their country approaches AI. The EU AI act, for example details types of AI and bans certain AIs. The US, as you just read, wants (to continue) global AI dominance —whatever that means.
Big Tech - Big tech knows that a shake up is happening because of AI. They just don’t know what it is and that’s had them worried. They are building stuff with AI like crazy and at the same time cozying up to governments to continue their global dominance of the proletariat.
AI Researchers and enthusiasts - I am clubbing all sorts of people who want to build AI models, build with AI models and tinker with already built AI models. From those who are working full time on fundamental AI models to those who are just tinkering with AI on weekends. They are a curious bunch that are interested in the technology. They have no idea of what will be found and have not bothered to think about how it might impact society. They prefer to leave that to governments and philosophers.
People - People do not understand the AI hype. They know that they have smart cars and email autocomplete. They use ChatGPT. A couple of years ago they were amazed at ChatGPT’s capabilities. It’s only been incremental for them since. “Yes, it’s two years later and we have a slightly better chatbot that can do a little more stuff. But if everyone is saying it is a big deal, something big must be around the corner. I am sure the government will regulate this to protect us and big tech is kind enough to adopt it for the net good of humanity.” is what their thinking is. They believe that their world view fed by big tech algorithms is the only world view there is and that governments will work to protect them.
There is no “Take Action” here. I started today’s post with the first piece of news being about the executive order and then rambled on about it, rather than stick to my structure.
AI’s an interesting space to keep watching and seeing all these groups interact with each other with their own agendas. Once you see it, you really cannot unsee this kind of stuff.
I don’t write much about AI regulation, preferring to ramble about different topics, more about the cybersecurity side of AI, but a newsletter I follow for knowing more about AI regulation is by Luiza Jarovsky - always spot on with her analysis.
