DeepFakes with NFTs? | Flipper Zero hacks iPhones
CyberInsights #118 - Generative AI can create | What does a little handheld device have to do with a DOS attack on iPhones?
Generative AI can create DeepFakes instantly
Can NFTs be the solution?
With Generative AI came DeepFakes.
The Twitterati (what do you otherwise call them? x-ati?🤷) have been abuzz about DeepFakes of celebrities.
An Indian celebrity had an encounter with the monstrous power of GenAI with a DeepFake. The content is not important. Just the fact that a simple DeepFake can be made had everyone talk about AI regulation.
Is regulation the only way to go? The Tech giants can implement NFTs (Non Fungible Tokens), a blockchain based technology that has been around for a while, to every piece of media uploaded on their platform. The industry would soon come up with apps that can easily be verified.
I am a firm believer in the power of NFTs. It’s way beyond colourful monkeys being sold on OpenSea.
Take Action:
If you are a part of Big Tech (some of my readers are) you should consider linking every uploaded media with an NFT.
If you are a regulator (I am not sure of that among my readers) you should consider this while thinking of grand ways to regulate AI.
If you are a cyber insurer (some of my readers are), remember that the risks associated with retail / individual cyber have increased tremendously.
If you are a cybersecurity consultant like me, then you should read up on the risk of DeepFakes because of GenAI. Read up on the technologies behind NFT.
Flipper Zero and iPhone hacks
A little device is in the news.
When ArsTechnica & Wired write about it, it is definitely worth exploring.
An upcoming device, Flipper Zero, can do wonders in wireless hacking. Soon, I believe it will be featured in all “What’s in by hacker bag” videos along with the WiFi Pineapple.
What’s interesting about Flipper Zero is that it focuses on short range wireless - like bluetooth.
In this attack it has been used to perform a DOS on iPhones. The only solution, so far, being to switch off the Bluetooth of said iPhone!

If you are an ethical hacker, explore this tool to see if you can provide services using this.
Implementing NFT for every uploaded media could be costly, but would be useful in evidence collection for incident investigation. It doesn't solve the niche problem of uniqueness of uploaded item unless a standard change is made to the upload before it's made available to viewers. Did you see the tool out there that poisons AI use of imagery for generation of new images? I see a case for incorporating that into art sites-
